FORMULA E IS MORE THAN A RACING SERIES. IT’S A PLATFORM SHAPING THE FUTURE.

Powered entirely by electricity, the series exists to accelerate positive change. Every lap helps refine the technologies that will make tomorrow’s mobility cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable.

INTRODUCTION

WHAT IS
FORMULA E?

Formula E is more than racing, it’s the highest level of electric single-seater competition in the world. The championship is embarking on Season 12 with a record-breaking race calendar, global venues and bold innovation at its heart. With the Gen3 Evo race car capable of 0-100 km/h in 1.86 seconds and an all-wheel-drive system, it sets a new benchmark in performance, agility and sustainability.

Every weekend in Formula E is a live-laboratory for the future of mobility. The cars run in city-centre street circuits, deploy Attack Mode and fast-charging pit-boost stops, and race on acalendar of up to 17 rounds, all contributing to advancing clean-electric technology for the road.

The format delivers action, strategy and innovation as the sport that drives mobility forward.

BORN FROM A VISION

BORN FROM A VISION

The story behind the championship

The idea for Formula E famously began as a sketch on the back of a napkin in 2011, when Alejandro Agag and FIA President Jean Todt imagined a championship that could accelerate the future of sustainable mobility.

Three years later, that simple drawing became reality with the inaugural race in Beijing in 2014. Since then, Formula E has evolved into a global platform for electric innovation, reshaping the world of motorsport and the future of mobility.

a championship like
no other

Formula E brings together world-class teams and drivers in cutting-edge electric single-seaters, competing on street circuits in the heart of the world’s most iconic cities. It’s a championship defined by innovation and strategy, where every lap counts.

The series also embraces exciting unique features like Attack Mode – a high-risk, high-reward power boost activated by leaving the ideal racing line.

With activation rules revealed only on race day, teams must adapt in real time, creating a strategic challenge found nowhere else in racing.

A NEW CHAPTER
IN ELECTRIC MOTORSPORT

The future starts with Gen3 Evo : Citroën Racing enters Formula E in its most advanced era yet. The Gen3 Evo race car showcases the very best in electric performance, marking a leap forward in speed, design, and sustainability.

THE FORMULA E GEN3 EVO

With all-wheel drive capability, dual-axle regenerative braking, greater efficiency, and speeds surpassing 320 km/h, the Gen3 Evo sets the standard for electric competition — and forms the foundation of Citroën’s debut in the championship.

THE FORMAT

ABOUT
THE RACING

Each Formula E weekend is fast-paced and highly competitive, with most sessions taking place on the same day. Teams must adapt quickly as they move through key stages (Free Practice, Qualifying, and the Race) all compressed into an intense, data-driven format that defines the championship.

free practice
Drivers take part in short Free Practice sessions to learn the street circuit, gather data, and fine- tune their car setup. Because Formula E races on temporary urban tracks that evolve throughout the day, these sessions are essential for adapting to changing grip levels, energy demands, and racing lines.
qualifying
Formula E’s qualifying format is one of the most strategic in motorsport. Drivers are split into two groups based on their championship standings and have a limited time to set their fastest lap at full 350 kW power. The quickest four from each group advance to the Duels – a knockout phase that determines the top positions on the grid through head-to-head laps. This format rewards precision, consistency, and bold risk-taking under pressure.
the race
Formula E races vary in length depending on the circuit, with drivers managing energy strategically while maintaining flat-out pace. With powerful regeneration on both axles and no mid-race charging (except for races that include PitBoost), energy management becomes a central skill, when to push, when to save, and how to defend or attack. This combination of pace, strategy, and efficiency makes each race unpredictable and highly competitive.

attack mode

Attack Mode is a signature Formula E innovation that gives drivers a temporary power boost. To activate it, they must drive off the racing line and pass through a dedicated activation zone, gaining extra power at the cost of time. The number of activations and duration are only revealed on race day, adding unpredictability and strategic depth to every race.

Pit boost

Pit Boost is Formula E’s new fast-charging innovation, available only at selected races in the calendar. Using ultra-high-power charging, teams can deliver a rapid energy boost during a mandatory pit stop, unlocking higher performance once the car re-joins the track. With limited opportunities to use it, Pit Boost adds a fresh layer of strategy as teams choose the perfect moment to deploy this advantage.
