CITROËN RACING TARGETS STRONG START TO EUROPEAN LEG OF THE FIA FORMULA E WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN MADRID

  • Gathering momentum: Round 6 of the 17-race FIA ABB Formula E World Championship marks the start of the European leg of the season.
  • Ideal location: Formula E takes to the historic 3.934 km, 14-turn Circuito del Jarama, located just outside Madrid.
  • All to play for: Nick Cassidy and Citroën Racing in fourth place in both the Drivers’ and Teams’ Championships, with Pit Boost set to add another strategic dimension.
Citroën Racing drivers Nick Cassidy and Jean-Éric Vergne return to Europe this weekend as the FIA ABB Formula E World Championship heads to Spain for the Madrid E-Prix at the historic Circuito del Jarama. The race presents a milestone moment for the Citroën brand as it makes its competitive single-seater debut on European soil.
Located just north of the Spanish capital, the 3.934 km circuit features 14 turns and presents a technical challenge for drivers and engineers alike. A mix of flowing corners and tighter sections places an emphasis on efficiency, precise race craft and energy management.
The venue’s proximity to central Madrid places the championship at the heart of one of Europe’s most vibrant cities. Spain is an important market for both Citroën and Formula E, and strong local engagement is expected as fans gather for the series’ first European race of the season.
Excitement in the capital has already been building following a special show run on la Calle del Doctor Esquerdo on Sunday 15 March, where Colombian driver Tatiana Calderón debuted the Citroën Racing Formula E GEN3 Evo car in front of thousands of fans ahead of the race weekend.
Madrid hosts Round 6 of the 17-race championship and marks the beginning of the European phase of the season, which also includes landmark events in Berlin, Monaco and the season finale later this year in London.
There will be one six-minute window of Attack Boost for drivers to take advantage of and Pit Boost will once again play a role during the race. The mandatory 30-second rapid-charging pit stop gives the cars and additional 10 per cent of power and invariably brings an additional strategic element that could prove decisive at Jarama.
Citroën Racing arrives in Spain well positioned in both championships. Nick Cassidy currently sits fourth in the Drivers’ standings after a strong start to the campaign, while the team also holds fourth place in the Teams’ Championship as the fight for points and championship places intensifies.
Following the race on 21 March, teams will remain at the circuit for the official in-season rookie test on 22 March where Théo Pourchaire and Joshua Durksen will be behind the wheel.
Citroën Racing Formula E Team Principal Cyril Blais said:
“Madrid is an important event for us both competitively and for Citroën commercially. Spain is a key market for the brand and bringing Formula E to a historic circuit so close to the centre of Madrid is a fantastic opportunity to connect with fans.
“From a sporting perspective, the championship remains very open. We are fourth in both standings, and our focus is to remain firmly in the fight as we begin the European phase of the season. Jarama presents an interesting technical challenge and with Pit Boost again part of the race, strategy will play a major role. Tyre management will also be a critical factor as Jarama is a high-degradation track and very tough on tyres. As always, our objective is to execute a clean weekend and continue building momentum in the championship.”
Citroën Racing Formula E Team Driver Nick Cassidy said:
“Jarama looks like an interesting track for us. It’s quite old-school compared to a lot of circuits we go to and it’s going to reward drivers who can be smooth and efficient across the whole race.
“The start of the season has brought mixed results and being fourth in the championship keeps us in the mix, but the field is incredibly tight, so the focus is on putting together a strong weekend. With Pit Boost in play there’s another strategic element to think about, so it will be one of those races where timing and execution make a big difference.”
Citroën Racing Formula E Team Driver Jean-Éric Vergne said:
“It’s always good for the sport when the championship races at circuits with real history, and Jarama is certainly one of those places. It’s quite technical and there are several corners where you need to be very precise with the car, there’s not much room for error.
“The competition this season is extremely close, so we know how important it is to maximise every session. If we execute well across qualifying, the race strategy and Pit Boost, there is a good opportunity for us to score strong points this weekend and I want to make sure that I capitalise on this.”
